Billy Colbert (USA)
Billy Colbert was born in Baltimore in 1970. His work can be described as visual folklore. He is intrigued by the lost art of story telling and its listening audience. As a result, Colbert tries to captivate the viewers of his work and allow them to feel the experience of those whose lives are represented in his art. He composes imagery, literature, and nature into a layered atmosphere which serves as documentation of the past and the foundation for the future.
Colbert’s most notable solo exhibitions have been museum shows at the African American Museum in Dallas, Texas, and the Delaware Center for Contemporary Art in Wilmington, Delaware. In 2000, Colbert was selected best in show for the prestigious Carroll Harris Simms National Black Art Biennial Competition.
Colbert’s work is in many private as well as public collections. He received his MFA in Painting from the University of Delaware in 2000, where he was a Presidential Fellow.
